1. Who we are
BINMAN is a product of EarthPulse, a youth-led environmental initiative based in Mombasa, Kenya. The legal entity that will operate BINMAN, and its registration details, will be named here before the app launches. We intend to register as a data controller with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner before collecting personal data through the app.
2. This website
This website does not ask you for personal information and has no sign-up forms.
- Cookies. The site does not set advertising or tracking cookies. See the Cookie Policy.
- Analytics. Website analytics are not currently in use. If they are introduced, they will be cookieless and aggregate, and only with your permission through Cookie Settings.
- Hosting. Like any website, our host processes technical data such as your IP address and browser type to deliver pages and keep the service secure.
- The interactive demo. The prototype on this site runs entirely with sample data. Nothing you tap or type in it is sent to us or stored. It loads its typeface from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests that file from Google.
3. The BINMAN app
The app is not yet publicly available. Based on how it is being designed, we expect to process the following when it launches:
- Account details: your name and mobile number, verified with a one-time code.
- Hub and account type: the community hub you join and whether you are a household or a business. Businesses may provide business registration details.
- Drop-off records: the drop-offs linked to your account, including stream, weight, date, time and hub.
- Wallet and payments: eligible earnings, withdrawals, and the M-Pesa number and transaction references used for them. We will never ask for your M-Pesa PIN.
- Support and device data: messages you send us, and basic technical information needed to keep the app working.
Hub agents and collection partners who use the app will have their own account and activity records processed for the same purposes.
4. How we use data
- To run your account and connect you with your hub (performance of a contract).
- To record drop-offs, verify weights across the collection chain, and pay eligible earnings (contract and legal obligation).
- To prevent fraud and keep the service secure (legitimate interests).
- To report aggregate, non-identifying figures about participation and material collected (legitimate interests).
- To send service messages. Marketing messages only with your consent.
5. Who we share it with
We do not sell personal data. We expect to share limited data with:
- Your hub agent, to identify you and record your drop-offs.
- Collection and processing partners, only what is needed to reconcile weights. Individual household details are not needed for this and will not be shared by default.
- Payment providers, such as Safaricom for M-Pesa withdrawals.
- Service providers who host or support the app, under agreements that protect your data.
- Authorities, where the law requires it.
If any data is stored or processed outside Kenya, we will use the safeguards the Data Protection Act requires and describe them here.
6. Keeping and protecting data
We will keep personal data only as long as needed for the purposes above, including any period the law requires for payment records. Specific retention periods will be set before launch and published here. We will use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect data, and notify you and the regulator of a breach where the law requires.
7. Your rights
Under the Data Protection Act you have the right to:
- be informed about how your data is used, and access it;
- correct inaccurate data, or have data deleted where it is no longer needed;
- object to processing, including marketing;
- ask for your data in a portable format; and
- complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
8. Children
The app is intended for adults. Accounts should be opened by someone aged 18 or over, who can manage the account on behalf of their household.
9. Changes and contact
We will update this policy before the app launches and whenever our practices change, and show the date at the top. To ask about your data, contact the team through EarthPulse (a dedicated BINMAN contact address will be published on this page before launch).
