Why BINMAN focuses
on food waste.
BINMAN is starting in Mombasa, Kenya. When kitchen scraps are thrown away with other rubbish, they are usually buried. When they are kept separate, they can be composted or used to make biogas. BINMAN helps households separate food waste, rewards eligible contributions, and gets the waste to local partners who can process it.

Composting and biogas.
Separated food waste does not all go to the same place. The route depends on the processor and on what the waste is suitable for.
Biogas
Gas for cooking and energy.
In a sealed digester, food waste produces biogas that can be used for cooking or energy. The material left over, called digestate, can be used after treatment.
BINMAN connects separated food waste with collection and processing partners. It does not run composting or biogas facilities itself. Dry recyclables such as paper, plastic, glass and metal follow their own recycling routes.
What we will measure.
This page has no impact totals because none have been verified yet. These are the figures we plan to report once they have been checked.
Estimates such as avoided emissions need a documented method and agreed conversion factors. We will not publish them until that method is in place.

Four things you can do at home.
Keep food scraps in their own caddy
Food waste mixed with paper or plastic makes both harder to process.
Drain liquids and leave out packaging
Do not put plastic bags, cutlery or foil in the caddy. Processors cannot use them.
Follow your hub's list
Each hub and its processors accept different things. Check your hub's list in the app.
Tell your neighbours
The more households in a building use the hub, the more food waste it can collect.
